My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a 2002 romantic-comedy film that follows Greek-American Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos (Vardalos), a quiet and shy 30-year-old woman who works at the restaurant owned by her loud and obtrusive family in Chicago. When handsome school teacher Ian Miller (Corbett) enters her life, Toula begins to work hard to pursue her passions and a budding new romance, finding newfound confidence in herself along the way. But as things progress between herself and the non-Greek Ian, Toula is faced with the challenge of getting her large Greek family to accept her beau.
Released in March 2016, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 picks back up with Toula and Ian as they face a whole new set of challenges. Not only is her travel agency closed due to the current recession, but Toula is also struggling in the face of some marital strain with Ian as well the the constant butting of heads between herself and her 17-year-old daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris). Paris feels stifled by her large and nosey Greek family and applies to colleges mostly far from Chicago in hopes of getting some freedom and privacy.
While desperately trying to “fix” things between herself and Ian and Paris, Toula also has to deal with her aging parents, her ever-present massive circle of extended family and friends, and a shocking family secret that ushers in the Portokalos family’s biggest wedding yet.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 premiered in US theaters just a few weeks ago on September 8, 2023, reuniting us with the Portokalos family one more time for a massive family reunion in Greece following the death of Toula’s father, Gus (Michael Constantine, who passed away in real life in 2021).
