Augusta Commission begins planning for next SPLOST

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Augusta leaders are firing off ideas for the next phase of the sales tax.

“We need to focus on our first responders, our fire department needs new firetrucks, and our Sheriff needs new Jail pod,” said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

The Interim administrator plan for SPLOST 9 is a $300 million package with priority 1 infrastructure, along with needs at the Marina, Boathouse, and detention center to name a few priority 1A city facilities.

“These dollars will allow us to go in and do some mass renovations as well as construct new facilities where needed,” said Interim Administrator Takiyah Douse.

Douse saying planning is key because there will be far more requests than SPLOST dollars available.

“If you look around our city, there’s lots of needs especially as it relates to infrastructure and facilities. I’m excited that we’re finally under way having the discussions,” said Mayor Garnett Johnson.

Commissioner Jordan Johnson says some SPLOST dollars should also be used to generate excitement for the city.

“Something that would give Augusta the wow factor like fixing our Riverwalk and not just maintaining it. Doing something big down there,” Johnson said.

But city leaders are not going to be big on every SPLOST idea.

“Commissioner Jordan Johnson wanted a big wow on there. To be truthful, I’d rather not support that at all,” said Guilfoyle.

The Commissioners’ plan is to hold the next SPLOST referendum in November of next year so there’s time to debate the differences.
