CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — About 1,200 Central Illinois residents will remain under a boil order until Sunday night following repairs to a water main near Champaign.
On Friday, Tuscola city officials posted on Facebook that a water main leak took place in Champaign County at the main that supplies water to the city. As a result, residents were being asked to conserve water. Now, the water main leak due to a sinkhole in Champaign has been fixed and Tuscola residents are no longer being advised to conserve water, but a boil order has been implemented.
Saturday morning, the Arcola Fire Protection District posted on Facebook that Arcola, Tuscola, Sadorus, Embarras and Pesotum are all under a boil order due to the main repairs. This order is expected to be in effect until 10 p.m. on Sunday.
Jeff Mercer, the Operator for West Prairie Water Company, said this boil order is affecting roughly 1,200 people in rural Douglas, Moultrie, Piatt and Coles Counties.
In an announcement Saturday morning, Tuscola City Treasurer Alta L. Long said Illinois American has completed the main repairs, meaning Tuscola will resume taking on water from their supply, noting that this supply is “plentiful” again.
All water to be used for cooking and drinking should be brought to a rolling boil for five minutes prior to using. The water is fine to use for bathing, washing and other common uses.
