Breaking: Campus Shooting Incident at University of Illinois Sparks Urgent Police Response

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Just after midnight on Saturday, the University of Illinois Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the Campustown area.

Around 12:30 a.m., an Illini-Alert Emergency was issued, notifying the public of shots fired near 411 E Green Street and advising people to steer clear of the vicinity. Individuals unable to evacuate were instructed to secure their immediate surroundings.

At about 1:08 a.m., a follow-up alert indicated that the suspect had likely left the scene. By 2:48 a.m., WCIA reporters on-site noted the presence of at least five police vehicles and about 10 officers who had established a crime scene at the intersection of Fifth and Green Streets. The area was cordoned off with crime scene tape, and at least 10 evidence markers were visible on the ground.

An update issued through Illini-Alert at 4:23 a.m. confirmed the situation had been resolved, signaling that normal activities could safely resume in the area.

WCIA reached out to UIPD for more information, and they said a press release will come out shortly regarding this incident.
