Budzinski Discusses SNAP Changes with Champaign Food Aid Nonprofit

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Following a week of intense discussions between the Trump administration and a federal judge, a governmental body has announced its commitment to fully fund the SNAP program.

Recently, a judge in Rhode Island mandated that the SNAP program receive full funding for November, a decision reported by WCIA on Thursday. The USDA has confirmed its efforts to comply with this ruling. As this development unfolded, Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski visited the nonprofit organization, The Land Connection, in Champaign to explore the broader impact on more than just the program’s beneficiaries.

Where to find food assistance or contribute to Central IL communities

The Land Connection, which operates the Champaign Farmers Market and supports eight others including Urbana’s, maintains regular communication with both farmers and SNAP beneficiaries who attend these markets. Both groups have felt the strain and are hopeful that the latest funding news will bring relief.

“Many of our farmers depend on part of their income from food assistance programs we facilitate at The Land Connection,” stated Executive Director Jacquelyn Evers. “Through our link match program, we enable nine farmers markets across Central Illinois to process SNAP cards and provide additional food dollars beyond what recipients spend using their link cards.”

“That could be anywhere from $100,000-150,000 a year,” Evers said.

With a significant chunk, around 25% of total sales, supporting farmers in the area.

“We have one vendor that up their percentage of snap sales, equates to $40,000, from farmer’s markets throughout the year,” Evers said.

As they were talking, the USDA made an announcement, saying they are working towards implementing November 2025 full benefit issuances in compliance with a Rhode Island judge’s order. But it hasn’t hit yet.

One 62-year-old in Central Illinois who uses SNAP said he normally gets $157 dollars a month, but as of today, he only got $20. He said he’ll have to make that stretch unless something changes, and he feels like he and others are a casualty of the politics around the government shutdown.

He also said he called into the office providing his benefits, but they did not know when those funds would be released.
