In Savannah, Georgia, the year 2025 has been tracking close to typical rainfall levels, though the region is currently experiencing a slight deficit, with rainfall about three-quarters of an inch below the annual average. While this shortfall is not immediately alarming, areas surrounding Savannah are grappling with more concerning issues, as moderate to severe drought conditions have taken hold.
Savannah itself has weathered the season relatively well, recording a total of 3.34 inches of rain in October, which is just 0.38 inches shy of the norm. However, regions lying inland, particularly west of Interstate 95 and south of Highway 16, have missed out on beneficial rainfall. This scarcity has led to escalating drought conditions, especially in Screven County and extending southward into Bacon, Appling, and Wayne counties.
As these dry spells linger, residents are encouraged to actively engage in water conservation efforts to safeguard both personal and community water resources. Implementing simple conservation strategies can be crucial during these times.
- Conserve water: Report any leaks, such as broken pipes or open hydrants, to local authorities.
- Water smart: If you need to water your lawn or plants, do so in the early morning to reduce evaporation. It’s best to water deeply but infrequently. Soak the soil 6 to 8 inches deep to encourage strong root growth.
- Adjust lawn care: During drought, lawns don’t need to be mowed as often. When you mow, leave grass clippings on the lawn to act as natural mulch, helping retain moisture and return nutrients to the soil.
- Limit foot traffic: If your lawn is very dry, try to minimize walking, playing, or driving on it to prevent further stress or damage.
Unfortunately, the forecast for the coming week does not promise any significant rainfall, with the next potential, albeit minimal, chance of showers anticipated for the following weekend. The outlook from the Climate Prediction Center suggests the region will continue to experience below-average precipitation as we approach Thanksgiving. Until then, it’s advisable to persist with water-saving measures and maintain your gardens and lawns to help them endure the ongoing drought conditions.
