Mishandled baggage is a common issue at airports worldwide, and according to a recent study conducted by Arka, a packing company based in California, Miami International Airport (MIA) tops the list of airports struggling with this problem.
The study reveals that MIA misplaces approximately 306 bags for every million flights and around 5.5 bags per 1,000 passengers. With nearly 1,000 flights passing through MIA daily, the airport faces significant challenges in handling luggage efficiently, often resulting in frustration for travelers dealing with lost bags, as reported by Travel + Leisure.
Arka’s findings are derived from an analysis that considered two primary factors: the volume of passengers and the frequency of online searches for lost and found services related to luggage.
To ensure fair comparisons between airports, Arka adjusted their data to account for searches per million passengers, offering a more accurate reflection of lost luggage issues.
A spokesperson from Arka emphasized the importance of this information, noting, “Travelers should be aware of where these challenges are prevalent to better prepare and take necessary precautions. Meanwhile, airports need to prioritize investments in their systems to guarantee that passengers’ luggage arrives intact and on schedule.” This statement was shared with Travel + Leisure.
Arka reported that Chicago O’Hare International Airport ranks second, and Singapore Changi Airport ranks third as the top worst hubs for handling luggage.
