JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — An Atlanta-area man faces murder charges in connection with the death of his six-month-old son, following initial claims that the infant was abducted during a robbery.

Antonio Pearce reported to police on Sunday that his son, Nnakai Pratt, had been taken by assailants. According to Clayton County Police, Pearce alleged that two armed individuals dressed in black had stolen $6,500 in cash and 3 pounds of marijuana from an apartment he used as a stash house in Riverdale, located roughly 11 miles south of Atlanta. He further claimed that the men seized his son, who was strapped in a car seat, and escaped.

After an extensive two-day search, authorities discovered Nnakai’s body in a nearby wooded area on Tuesday evening. Pearce had already been apprehended on Sunday, initially facing charges of marijuana possession and traffic violations. Additional charges were filed when inconsistencies in his story emerged, leading to a charge of making a false statement.

Court documents reveal that by Wednesday, Pearce was officially charged with the murder of Nnakai. He also faces charges for concealing a death, tampering with evidence, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, cruelty to a child, and falsely reporting a crime.

Currently, no attorney is documented for Pearce in the court records.

A judge denied him bail during a bond hearing Wednesday on the false statements charge.

“You did provide contradictory statements in an investigation of a missing child, and when witness accounts verified your contradictory statements, you admitted to concealing and falsifying material facts,” Clayton County Magistrate Judge Keisha Hill Wright told Pearce on Wednesday.

The infant was a twin and his surviving sister has been placed in the custody of child welfare authorities, with police saying they were investigating if the mother had any role in the boy’s death.
