Fisher making efforts to get first public library

FISHER, Ill. (WCIA) — Public libraries can provide access to resources like books, computers and more. That’s why one village in Champaign County is taking the necessary steps to get one for the very first time.

Lead organizer Travis Wilson and others in the community are taking the initiative to get the Village of Fisher a public library of their own. Earlier this week, Wilson and his team proposed the idea to the village board.

Right now, they’re still in the initial process and are hoping everything goes smoothly. One volunteer said this isn’t their first time making the attempt for a public library.

“Fisher is one of the only small towns in the area that doesn’t have their own library,” said volunteer Kim Clemmons. “About 25 years ago, there was a push to try to get one at that point, and the tax referendum failed at that time. We definitely could use a library here in our town.”

She said people in town have to get a library card from surrounding communities if they’re interested in checking out a book. Clemmons said right now, they’re still getting everything figured out and waiting for their second meeting.
