CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — Nearly 30 people were issued citations or were arrested in Vermilion and Macon Counties following nighttime enforcement patrols by the Illinois State Police in August.

On Monday, State Police released the results of their nighttime enforcement patrols. State Police said these patrols allow troopers to focus on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement
action in response to impaired driving and vehicle violations — especially between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The results are as follows:

Violation Enforcement Activity
Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Citations 2
Other Alcohol/Drug Citations 1
Occupant Restraint Offenses 2
Registration Offenses 5
Driver’s License Offenses 5
Insurance Violations 4
Total Citations/Arrests 27
Total Written Warnings 9

State Police said that alcohol and drug impairment are estimated to be a factor in more than 47% of all deadly crashes in the state. And, there is one traffic death related to alcohol every 39 minutes in the nation.

Over half of all fatal crashes in Illinois happen at night. State Police said their nighttime enforcement program helps their troopers make roads safer at night.

The enforcement program was funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
