Illinois State Police conduct traffic stop, recover drugs in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Two people were taken into custody in Springfield over the weekend after state troopers recovered drugs during a traffic stop.

Just before 5:30 p.m. on May 24, Illinois State Police troopers conducted a traffic stop on North Grand near 19th St. in Springfield.

During the traffic stop, the driver, identified as 63-year-old John Vanhorn of Springfield, was taken into custody. State Police said the passenger, 38-year-old Dana Melvin of Kincaid, was also taken into custody.

Vanhorn was cited for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, improper display of registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Melvin was cited for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of cannabis by a passenger, attempt to obstruct identification and wanted on warrant.

Both were transported to the Sangamon County jail. Illinois State Police added that all people are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
