SAVANNAH, Ga. () — The Jenkins girls’ basketball team holds destiny in its hands. If they win out in their region games, they will be the No. 1 seed for the region tournament.
The girls are off to a perfect start. They are 5-0 in Region 3-AAA, but their biggest test comes Friday when they take on Calvary Day, who is also 5-0 in region competition. Then their next region game is against Liberty County, who maintains a 4-1 record. Then another game with Calvary Day on Feb. 4.
The other teams in the region probably do not want to know this: Jenkins core group of players are all sophomores and juniors.
The last time the Jenkins girls won the region tournament was the 2020-2021 season and they feel they are ready to do it again.
“Do I think we were able to compete with the Calvarys? Of course,” Jenkins girls basketball coach Brianna Brooker said. “We’re ready. The girls have found success in other sports and now that’s translated over to basketball. We’re in a position right now where we’re learning how to win. So it’s a slow process, but it’s coming. It’s coming along.”
Jenkins hosts Calvary Day Friday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.
