LINCOLN, Ill. (WCIA) — Two fire departments in Lincoln responded to a semi-truck fire on I-55 southbound Monday afternoon.
At 2:23 p.m. on Feb. 3, Lincoln Rural Fire Protection District units were dispatched for a report of a semi-truck on fire near milepost 125 by the Lincoln exit. Upon arrival, units found the semi-truck fully engulfed in flames, which also ignited the trailer.
Grass fires then started on the west ditch close to the truck, on the median and on the east side of the interstate as a result of the size of the fire and the wind. Mutual aid was requested from the Lincoln City Fire Department, tankers from Atlanta and Elkhart as well as a brush truck from Elkhart.
According to the Lincoln Rural Fire Protection District, the fire took “an extensive amount of time to fully extinguish” due to the cargo that was inside of the semi-truck. Additionally, a towing company removed the contents of the trailer in order to put the last of the fire out.
