VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A man was sentenced this week in Volusia County to over 52 years in prison in connection with a double shooting and escape.
Malik McKenzie was sentenced in two cases to 52.5 years in prison followed by five years of probation after he entered a no-contest plea in September to two counts of wearing a mask while committing attempted first-degree murder, wearing a mask while committing burglary of a dwelling while armed with a firearm and escape.
The Office Of The State Attorney R.J. Larizza, 7th Judicial Circuit, said McKenzie was accused of wearing a mask and gloves and breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s Deltona home in August 2024.

Officials said McKenzie shot the woman and her fiancé multiple times.
The victims were able to run away and recovered from their injuries at a hospital.
McKenzie was caught on surveillance video and was later arrested.
About a year later, while in custody at the Volusia County Jail, McKenzie and several other inmates were being moved between buildings to be transported to the courthouse for a hearing.
McKenzie was the last one in line and slipped away from correction officers before climbing onto the roof of the jail, where he got tangled up in razor wire, said officials, who added that he as then detained.
