New Bar with Atomic Bomb Theme to Open on Tybee Island

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. () – Tybee Island is introducing a new cocktail bar with a nod to the beach’s unique history.

In 1958, a thermal nuclear weapon was accidentally dropped off the coast of Tybee when an F-86 fighter jet collided with a B-47 bomber.

When the collusion happened, a recovery effort went into effect, but nothing was discovered, despite the fact that the bomb had 3.8 mega million tons of TNT.

The U.S. Airforce has insisted that Tybee is safe from danger since it’s believed the bomb was created without a trigger.

The new establishment is owned by Stu Putnam, who also owns King Neptune and The Window. Putnam’s son, Wes will be managing the 1950s themed development.

The bar will include lava lamps, bright retro memorabilia and atom shaped lamps, all in atomic bomb fashion.

“If you walk in, we have a real military practice bomb from the ’50s that’s hanging up. We have one of those pictures of the couple on the beach drinking a cocktail because we’re a cocktail bar with an atomic weapon going off,” said Wes.

The bar will open to the public Oct. 9. From Oct. 9 onward, they’ll be open Thursday-Saturday evenings.
