ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — Roan Mountain State Park now has an all-terrain wheelchair for visitors with mobility impairments.

According to the park, the new wheelchair can navigate different types of terrain and be operated independently or by a caregiver.

“We are delighted to offer this service,” said Greer Tidwell, deputy commissioner of conservation for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. “We intend to serve every person who wants to visit our parks, and we are dedicated to making the experience the best it can be for everyone. We are grateful to Gov. Bill Lee and the Tennessee General Assembly for the funding to make this happen.”

The park asks that requests to use the chair be given with prior notice. The chair may be requested upon arrival, but it may already be reserved.

All-terrain wheelchairs are available at 31 Tennessee state parks (local parks in bold):

Parts of Roan Mountain State Park remain closed due to damage from Hurricane Helene. More information on which areas have reopened can be found online.
