In an impressive turn of events for a Richmond Hill resident, more than $84,000 in stolen cryptocurrency has been successfully recovered, as announced by the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia on Monday.

The ordeal began in October 2024 when the victim discovered unauthorized transactions that ultimately led to the theft of roughly $124,000. The FBI took charge of the investigation, diligently tracking down the majority of the missing cryptocurrency. Their efforts uncovered connections to international perpetrators, including individuals based in Cambodia.

Through the process of a federal civil forfeiture case in Savannah, the misappropriated cryptocurrency was seized and subsequently returned to its rightful owner.

“The FBI is unwavering in its mission to secure justice for cybercrime victims, regardless of where the investigation may lead,” stated Paul Brown, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Atlanta division.

“The FBI is committed to pursuing justice for victims of cybercrime, no matter where the trail leads,” said Paul Brown, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta.

Brown said, “In this case, our agents used advanced investigative techniques to trace stolen cryptocurrency across international borders and recover funds that otherwise might have been lost forever.  We’ll continue working alongside our partners to identify cybercriminals, seize their illegal gains, and restore assets to those they’ve harmed.”
