Sen. Rouson discusses legislative future, mental health, and gubernatorial race

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — State Sen. Darryl Rouson is approaching the end of his term. The lawmaker, who is currently the longest sitting Democrat in Tallahassee, is term-limited from running again to keep his current seat. However, he’s considering whether to run for a seat in the Florida House of Representatives.

“I’m figuring it out. God only knows what’s next,” Rouson said.

The longtime lawmaker represents District 16, which is a portion of St. Petersburg. His district also goes into Tampa and other portions of Hillsborough County.

Rouson said he could use his voice as a private citizen or possibly as an elected official in a different seat.

“It’s nice to have options,” Rouson said. “Experience plus relationships equals success. I have the experience. I’ve built the relationships over the years. I think I’ve been fairly successful in the legislature.”

The personal injury lawyer is known for his work on mental health legislation after past struggles with addiction.

“There was stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders, but the conversation has changed in those 17 years to more remedial efforts,” Rouson said.

In June, lawmakers and Gov. Ron DeSantis agreed to name a mental health facility at USF after the St. Petersburg-based Democrat. Rouson is respected on both sides of the aisle.

He’s also familiar with former Rep. David Jolly, who is running for governor, following his switch to the Democratic Party. Jolly also lives in Pinellas County.

“I do have experience with Mr. Jolly. I think he’s a good man. But I have not made an endorsement in that race yet,” Rouson said.

District 16 is the subject of a federal court case. A group of voters sued over claims of illegal racial gerrymandering. People involved with the case expect to hear the ruling from a three-judge panel on whether the state will be forced to redraw the district. The state lawmaker is also not making any endorsement, yet, when it comes to the candidates who have announced a run for District 16.
