JASPER COUNTY, S.C. () — A traffic stop in Jasper County Thursday morning led to the seizure of approximately 1.76 pounds (800 grams) of fentanyl, a potent and often deadly opioid responsible for a rising number of overdoses nationwide.
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office (JSCO) Narcotics Enforcement Team, in collaboration with the Hardeeville Police Department, conducted the traffic stop on Interstate 95.
The stop resulted in the arrest of two individuals: 35-year-old Dervick Lamont Parker and 35-year-old Christopher James Smalls. Both were charged with trafficking fentanyl, simple possession of marijuana and open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
The fentanyl, discovered in brick form, marks a major disruption in the flow of illicit drugs through Jasper County and surrounding areas. Given the potency of fentanyl, even small amounts can be deadly, making this seizure particularly critical in protecting lives within our community.
Chief Sam Woodward of the Hardeeville Police Department stated, “We’re grateful for the strength of our partnership with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. Working as a combined unit allows us to tackle dangerous drugs like fentanyl head-on. Together, we’re making our cities and county safer for everyone.”
The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be pending.
