BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. () — The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) is reminding residents that the state’s annual tax-free weekend will run from Aug. 1 to Aug. 3.

During the sales tax holiday, shoppers can purchase certain back-to-school items without paying the state’s 6% sales tax or applicable local taxes.

The tax exemption applies to all retailers, for both in-person and online purchases.

Items exempt from sales tax include:

All eligible items, new or used, qualify regardless of price. Shoppers are encouraged to consult the full list of exempt and non-exempt items here before making purchases.

Last year, South Carolinians saved more than $1.3 million dollars in sales tax.

Retailers are required to participate and cannot charge tax on eligible items during the weekend. Resources for businesses, including filing guidance, are available here.
