CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Napoleon is the name of one pooch that is now forever immortalized at Eastern Illinois University.

Back in 1945, a stray golden retriever mix wandered onto EIU’s quad and quickly captured the hearts of students. The dog, which was known to the community as Napoleon, became a beloved presence on campus and was adopted by the whole student body.

Napoleon was often seen at football games, concerts and even during exams. The dog became the school’s unofficial mascot, as Napoleon slept in dorms, dined in the cafeteria and shared many student traditions. For 15 years, Napoleon attended every commencement ceremony at EIU.

On Friday, a memorial was unveiled on the university’s quad, overlooking one of Napoleon’s favorite spots.

“This tribute celebrates his unwavering loyalty and love for EIU, reminding all students and alumni of the bond they share with their university,” the EIU Alumni Association said in a Facebook post.
