TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 15-year-old was taken into custody Thursday after Tampa police said he was connected to a shooting in which another teen was gunned down while riding his bicycle.

Marquis Lee, 15, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and minor in possession of a firearm, the police department reported.

Investigators said the victim, 14-year-old Armando Gilbert, was riding his bicycle with another teen when the incident happened on Feb. 5.

At the same time, Lee was on his bicycle doing circles at the intersection of North Hillsborough Lane and East Juneau Street, officials said.

After the two teens passed by, investigators said Lee chased after them, eventually opening fire and shooting Gilbert multiple times. Lee took off immediately after the shooting, according to police.

Officers responded to the area around 6 p.m. and found Gilbert with upper body trauma. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Detectives said they learned through their investigation that Lee and Gilbert had prior disputes before the shooting occurred.

Lee was taken into custody around 6 p.m. on Feb. 6 with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitives Task Force.

“No parent should ever experience the heartbreaking loss of a child, especially in such a senseless and unjust way,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “As we grieve alongside Armando’s family and offer them support during this unimaginable time, we remain committed to holding juveniles accountable when they decide to take someone else’s life. Armando’s family deserves nothing less than justice, and I’m deeply proud of the swift efforts of the men and women who worked tirelessly to make an arrest within 24 hours of this tragedy.”
