TILTON, Ill. (WCIA) — The State of Illinois repealed its grocery tax, but the Village of Tilton is now creating their own.

It passed last Thursday at the village board meeting. Tilton joins Danville as communities in Vermilion County to pass a replacement tax. The current state tax on groceries sits at about 1%, meaning every $100 of groceries results in one dollar given to the municipality.

Mayor of Tilton William Wear said the tax will continue to fund critical services in town.

“The general fund is what helps pay for the police department,” Wear said. “In our case, the police department goes out to fire protection, goes out to ambulance service, goes out to street repair. It just goes into the general infrastructure of the village. So that’s why it’s so important.”

The state will no longer tax groceries beginning at the start of next year. That’s when Tilton’s grocery tax will go into effect.
