JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Water and Sewer Services Department is urging residents to protect pipes ahead of cold weather.

According to the department, pipes typically freeze when temperatures drop to 20 degrees or lower for extended periods.

The Storm Team 11 forecast predicts dangerously cold air will impact the region Sunday night and last through Thursday morning. Temperatures will dip into the low teens Sunday night with wind chills below zero.

The department provided the following tips to help residents protect water pipes.

Eliminate Drafts

Insulate

Protect Meter

Protect outside faucets

Drain pipes if leaving town

Leave faucet running

Open cabinet doors

Thaw carefully

Locate shut-off valve
