WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A shooting erupted near Howard University on Friday night, resulting in five individuals being hospitalized, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
Authorities reported that officers were dispatched following reports of gunfire at 8:23 p.m. in the 600 block of Howard Place NW.
Upon arrival, officers discovered three men, a woman, and a 13-year-old boy, all suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. They were promptly transported to a hospital by DC Fire and EMS for treatment.
Police clarified that none of the injured were Howard University students. However, one of the victims is a student at Morgan State University, which is scheduled to play against Howard University in a football game on Saturday, October 25.
Law enforcement officials stated that two individuals were taken into custody, and three firearms were seized at the scene.
One of the suspects attempted to run from officers, which ended in their arrest in a McDonald’s parking lot.
The identities of the suspects have not been released.
The shooting occurred during the week of the University’s annual homecoming celebration, which is set to last through Oct. 26.
A witness told DC News Now he was with his cousin when the shooting broke out.
“All we heard was yelling,” he said. “We can’t do nothing in D.C. … this happens every time there’s a function in D.C., especially homecoming. D.C. [is] dangerous.”
Jaiden Ramirez, a witness, said he was playing basketball when he saw three men running across the street, yelling at people. Then he heard six to seven gunshots ring out.
“We panicked, we ran inside, and then we came outside 30 minutes after. We were not trying to get shot,” Ramirez described.
