AUGUSTA, Ga. () — Two people are facing charges after a man was shot in the head during an attempted robbery in downtown Augusta.
Authorities say it happened just after 2 a.m. Saturday near the 900 block of Broad Street, as bars and clubs were closing. Deputies already on foot patrol heard the shot and rushed over.
They found a 61-year-old man from Edgefield, South Carolina, critically hurt. EMS rushed him to Wellstar MCG.
Because of the department’s downtown safety plan—two deputies assigned to every block—officers quickly arrested two suspects nearby and recovered a gun.
Da’Mon Cole, 28, and Destiny Reeves, 27, are charged with aggravated assault, criminal attempt armed robbery, and having a gun during a crime. Cole also faces charges as a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
Investigators say Reeves led the victim toward a parked car where Cole was hiding. She told deputies they planned to rob the man. As the victim got close, Cole stepped out and shot him.
Sheriff Brantley praised his team’s fast response and says the department will keep focusing on keeping downtown safe.
