SAVANNAH, Ga. () — An iconic restaurant is turning 70 this September and is celebrating with a special waffle for all to order.
Today, Waffle House is a staple for many across the 25 states that don the bright yellow sign, but it all started 70 years ago in a town east of Atlanta.
Waffle House was first opened by two Georgians, Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner, in Avondale Estates. They decided to open a 24-hour, sit-down restaurant to focus on fellowship between friends and neighbors.
The now popular chain became a Southern classic over the past seven decades.
To celebrate the monumental birthday, they will debut a waffle topped with cake bits, confetti crunch and whipped cream, according to Southern Living. The waffle will be available for a limited time and select locations.
There will also be an open house at the original Waffle House, which now serves as the Waffle House Museum on Sept. 6 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Typically, folks would have to make a reservation, but the business will be open to the public and even feature a food truck serving free birthday waffles.
The restored restaurant turned museum is located on 2719 E College Ave., Decatur, Ga.
