LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – Robin Severance Lopez could walk out of the Lake County Jail as soon as Thursday.

Severance Lopez, the estranged wife of suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez—who was released from the same jail late last month—has been embroiled in the same investigation that drew nationwide attention following Lopez’s arrest June 5.

A bond hearing is set for Thursday, when Severance Lopez’s attorney hopes a judge will determine that the source of funds for Severance-Lopez’s $400,000 bond is clean.

“It’s tragic that Ms. Severance Lopez has been swept up in this case given her lack of involvement in any conspiracy,” attorney Michelle Yard wrote in a statement to News 6 Wednesday. “I am highly optimistic that the judge will finally allow her release from detention at the hearing tomorrow, and I look forward to fighting this allegation against her moving forward.”

Severance-Lopez has been charged with racketeering, accused of engaging in a criminal enterprise tied to illegal gambling, alongside her estranged husband and several other co-defendants.

Ahead of the bond hearing, News 6 obtained documents Wednesday that offered a glimpse into Severance Lopez’s prior employment with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

News 6’s Mike Valente combed through dozens of pages of her original application to the force in 2003, as well as several evaluations assessing her performance up until 2014.

In written remarks included in her application, Severance Lopez stated that she wanted a career that “fits my personality and my beliefs.”

“I was brought up to have respect for others, to always tell the truth (For the truth will always prevail),” she wrote. “And to be an honorable, hardworking, morally ethical young woman.”

After she was hired, evaluations reviewed by News 6 indicated that she was thought of favorably by supervisors.

In 2007, the same year she married Marcos Lopez, Severance Lopez served as a school resource officer.

In an evaluation form, a supervisor wrote that she was “dependable and conscientious when it comes to making sure the school is secure and safe for the students and school employees.”

A few years later, she instructed a class called ‘Too Good For Drugs.’

In various categories, supervisors rated her performance as ‘Meets Standard,’ ‘Above Standard,’ and ‘Exemplary Performance.’

In a rare instance, during a 2012 evaluation, Severance Lopez received a ‘Requires Improvement’ for her performance related to ‘Dependability.’

“Deputy Lopez needs to improve in this area,” her supervisor at the time wrote. “During this evaluation period, there have been several instances where her dependability is questioned.”

The supervisor later detailed a situation where an attorney from the State Attorney’s Office wrote a two-page letter that was “extremely critical” of Severance Lopez’s testimony for a case that she investigated.

The attorney complained about Severance Lopez’s “lack of preparation.”

The supervisor also mentioned a required court appearance in November 2011 that Severance Lopez missed, resulting in a dismissal of the case.

In the same evaluation, however, the supervisor called Severance Lopez a “hard worker” and “very motivated.”

“Deputy Lopez is an asset to the squad,” the supervisor wrote. “She needs little assistance and produces a quality work product.”
