Spurs pushing for winner

The game has become tense, but Spurs don’t seem willing to settle for a point.

Maddison and Son are replaced by Hojberg and Richarlison as Spurs look to get a crisp passing move going.

Nelson takes a shot from distance but it takes a big deflection and flies well wide.

Good chance for Son

Wonderful pass from Kulusevki finds Son in the box but the striker can oly find the keeper.

There is worse news further back for Spurs after Maddison went down. He jammed his leg in an awkward loooking posiition and looks to be in real pain.

He’s going to play on but doesn’t look good.

Johnson looks hurt

The winger has gone down and will be replaced by Solomon.

It’s a real shame for the winger after an impressive performance on his full debut.

His pace has caused problems at times ans he could be a real asset for Sputs going forward.

SON EQUALISES STRAIGHT AWAY

Sublime finish and we’re back level!

Jorginho gets caught out straight away and Tottenham capitalise immediately.

It’s a wonderfuly compsoed and crisp move forward that ends with the captain, who slots neatly past Raya.

We’re level again in what is becoming a classic North London derby.

SAKA SCORES FROM THE SPOT

A classy finish from Saka and Arsenal lead again!

Spurs will feel hard down after a very marginal penalty.

It could be a long way back now.

PENALTY GIVEN

The penalty is given and there will be a lot of talk over this.

It definitely hits his hand but it’s not clear what else he could have done.

An afternoon to forget for Romero.

PENALTY SHOUT FOR ARSENAL

Big shout for a handball in the box from Arsenal.

Romero is the culprit again, the ball hits his hand in a crowded penalty area but it’s certaonly not inetnional and not far from his body.

We have a VAR check, and the referee will check the monitor.

Lively from Johnson

Saliba gives the ball away just inside his own half and Joohnson pounces.

He makes a good run down the right and would ahve the beating of most defenders but Saliba catches up well and snuffs out the chance.

BACK UNDERWAY

We’re back underway in North London.

Jorgingo and Havertz come on for Rice and Vieira at half time.

HALF TIME

The two sides go in level after a thrilling first half.

Arsenal kept the pressure on Spurs throughout the first 45 minutes, and while the visitors dealt with it well at times there were moments of vunerability.

There were also some excellent moments from Tottenham as well, though, with one glorious move denied only by a spectacular save from Raya.

That chance revitalised Postecoglou’s men, and Son fired in an equaliser that sets up a fascinating second half at the Emirates.

SON MAKES IT 1-1

Raya flaps at a high ball and Arsenal never really recover as they fail to clear their lines.

It falls to Son in the box as three open defenders fail to close him down and the Spurs captain finishes comfortably to level the game.

A crucial goal for the visitors after a tricky 20 minutes.

WHAT A SAVE FROM RAYA

It’s a silky move from Tottenham as they pass it between one another with real ease.

It looks like a certain equaliser as Johnson hits a curling effort towards the far post, but Raya gets across brilliantly to knock the ball away at full strength.

Brilliant from the keeper, but Spurs will be buoyed by that move.

Curling shot from Odegaard

Lovely feet from Saka on the wing and he finds Odegaard on the edge of the box.

The crowd implores him to shoot and he hits a nice curling effort, but Vicario sees it all the way and it’s an easy save.

Chance for Jesus

Arsenal’s pressing pays off as Jesus picks Maddison’s pocket on the edge of the box.

It’s a brilliant chance with the srtiker one on one with Vicario, but he fires his shot well over the bar.

ARSENAL TAKE THE LEAD

Saka has caused all sorts of problems and works himself into space on the right wing.

He whips in a teasing ball and Romero sticks out a leg to try and clear it, but can only turn the ball into his own net.

A deserved lead for Arsenal after an energtic start.

Good chance for Nketiah

The ball falls for Nketiah in a similar position on the right wing and he gets a good chance against the keeper.

Vicario saves again, but Spurs are under a lot of pressure now.

They’ve had plently of the ball but ahven’t been able to get up the pitch enough.

Good save from Vicario

Jesus drifts away from his man at the back post and hits a firm shto into the ground after Saka’s cross.

He hits it across Vicario, who makes a brilliant reacton save to keep it 0-0.

Best chance of the game so far.

Tottenham coping well

Arsenal have continued to press aggresively but Spurs have kept their cool and passed the ball around crisply.

Saka links up silily with Odegaard on the wing but it comes to nothing.

Johnson then comes forward nicely again but can’t get a cross into the middle.

The Welshman has brought an injection of pace to the Spurs front line and looks a threat.

Son puts in it… But it’s offside

The Spurs captain pokes the ball past Raya from close range but it is clearly offside, he doesn’t even bother celebrating.

Johnson takes a shot after a confident run but it’s defelcted harmlessly over the goal.

High pressing from Arsenal

The Gunners look right up for this and are giving their rivals no space at all as they try and pass out from the back.

We’ve already seen two fouls in a typivally fiesty North London derby.

KICK OFF

We’re underway in North London!

Spurs kick off first in one of English football’s biggest games.

15 minutes to go

We’re closing in on kick off in what should be a fascinating game this afternoon.

Injuried to Martinelli and Trossard mean Jesus and Nkeitah arre starting a Premier League game togtether for the first time.

This is also the first North London derby in 17 with no Harry Kane.

Maddison arrives

The former Leicester man has been a key player for Spurs since his arrival over the summer.

He already seems popular among fans and players alike, and has been at the heart of Postecoglou’s attractive brand of football.

Maddison will be an important cog in unlocking an Arsenal defence that have conceded just 10 shots on target this season.

Johnson starts

It will be a full debut for the former Nottingham Forest man today and what a game to make it in.

Johnson faces a big test today and will have never faced a crowd this hostile.

The Likes of Son and Kulusevki will be important figures to guide him through a real test.

Sherwood: Maddison has to be the main man

Former Tottenham player and manager Tim Sherwood, speaking at a Sky Sports Golf day ahead of the Ryder Cup, said of James Maddison…

‘I think he’s done well up to now, and I definitely saw him do well for Leicester previously, but then it has tailed off. I think with better players around him now I think he can keep that level and that consistency.

‘When you’re playing for a big side like Tottenham and you need to be the main man – I think he has the character to be able to do it, and I just hope that the other players around him can help to keep that level of performance going, because he makes such a difference when he’s on the ball.

‘He’s the man who opens the door, he drops the shoulder, he can disguise a pass and nick goals as well. I’m very encouraged by the way that he’s started, and I think you must give the manager a lot of credit for that.

‘I think a draw would be a decent result for Tottenham – they won’t be going there looking for a draw because of the way Postecoglou wants to set them out, they’ll play a very open game, but Arsenal at home will be veery dangerous. I see Arsenal scoring, but I also see Tottenham scoring so I’m going to go for a 1-1 draw.’

Parlour: Rice is a leader for Arsenal

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour, speaking at a Sky Sports Golf day ahead of the Ryder Cup, said of Declan Rice…

He’s been a great signing, as a leader – I know he’s not captain at the moment – but you need leaders in a big game, all round the park against Tottenham so he’s going to be very important.

‘He’s fitted in so nicely into that midfield. I’d like to see him get forward a little bit more. I think he’s going to show his real value against the bigger and better sides, so I think this is a big game for him in the North London derby.

‘Spurs are going well as well, so I think it’s going to be a really interesting game. Spurs are going to come out and be a bit more attacking as usually they would just sit there and try and soak up the pressure. They’re a bit more attack minded now, so it could be an open game.’

A big day for Johnson?

Brennan Johnson made his Spurs debut with 10 minutes to go in their clash with Sheffield United last week.

They trailed 1-0 when he came on, but produced a stunning comeback to win 2-1 thanks to do goals in injury time.

Postecoglou was impressed by the Welsh winger’s performance, and Mail Sport understands the manager is seriously considering a full debut for Johnson this afternoon.

Attacking issues for Arsenal?

It will be interesting to see if Leandro Trossard is available today.

Concerns were raised after the Belgian didn’t feature in training pictures on Friday, Mail Sport understands that Trossard is a genuine doubt to face Spurs this afternoon.

Gabriel Martinelli, who picked up a hamstring injury against Everton last Sunday, is also set to miss the derby.

If Trossard and Martinelli are unavailable it will be interesting to see how Mikel Arteta shapes his attack

Previous Spurs managers have been happy to settle for a point at the Emirates and suffered accordingly.

As Danny Murphy writes, it will be different this afternoon.

The Emirates has been a tough place to come for Spurs for over a decade, and a win today would cement Postecoglou’s revolution.

Ryan Walker runs through the fixture’s recent history.

What’s the form like?

Arsenal have started the season well with five wins and a draw from their opening five games, although they have rarely dominated for a full 90 minutes.

They beat Manchester United 3-1 before the international break in an impressive performance, but could only manage a 1-0 win over Everton on Sunday.

Arteta’s men will be tested this afternoon against a side that has also dropped just two points in their opening five games.

Postecoglou has brought attractive football and a feel-good atmopshere to Tottenham, although they did requite two stoppage time goals to beat Sheffield United in their last game.

Good morning!

And welcome to Mail Sport’s coverage of the North London derby.

We’ll have all the updates as Ange Postecoglou faces his toughest test yet.
