DEMOCRATIC mayor Tiffany Henyard has suffered a crushing defeat in a primary election after a scandal-ridden term in office.

Henyard was routed on Tuesday following a vote in Dolton, a suburb of Chicago, on Tuesday night where voters overwhelmingly rejected her.

She only received 536 votes in the poll, compared to her challenger Jason House who pocketed 3,896.

He had been campaigning on a promise to restore transparency to the local government.

Henyard has spoken out following her heavy defeat at the ballot box.

“The people have spoken,” she said.

“God must have a different plan for me.”

Henyard will not leave office straightaway following her loss.

Her term doesn’t end until May.

Embattled mayor Henyard was the subject of a probe where they examined reckless spending allegations.

Henyard allegedly used town credit cards to spend $43,000 on Amazon in one day.

The investigation also claimed she spent more than $7,000 at Wayfair and more than $2,200 at Best Buy.

Henyard allegedly spent more than $1,000 at the drugstore chain Walgreens in October 2023.

And, a series of Best Buy transactions were made on town credit cards over a two-week period in December.

Henyard was also known for taking lavish trips during her term, which started in 2021.

She and her team spent more than $67,000 for trips to Portland, Austin, Atlanta and New York City over a five month period, as reported by WGN-TV.

They stayed at the Four Seasons hotel in Atlanta and their bill was more than $9,000.

The mayor and her team spent more than $13,000 as they stayed at a Times Square hotel.

And, they flew by first class, according to the probe.

In 2022, the government in Dolton had a $5.6 million surplus, but in 2024, this turned into a deficit of $3.6 million.
