Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-Md.) said Sunday that the U.S. “is at a boiling point,” a comment that came in the wake of the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“We’re certainly at a crossroads in this nation as a community and as a country, and the political violence we saw this week with Charlie Kirk is the same way many Americans felt about the political assassination of Minnesota Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband in their home, the bombing of the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion, the attempted assassinations on the president,” Elfreth said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“We are at a boiling point in this country,” she added.

Kirk was talking at a Utah Valley University event Wednesday when he was fatally shot. Following a manhunt featuring local, state and federal law enforcement, officials identified the alleged suspect as Tyler Robinson, 22, of Utah.

On Friday, Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) pushed for the public to not focus on the political alignment of the suspected Kirk shooter, but to instead focus on mental well-being.

“What f—— difference does it make if this murderer was left or right. Pull yourself together, read a book, get some exercise, have a whiskey or walk the dog or make some pasta or go fishing or just do anything other than let this algo pickle your brain and ruin your soul,” Schatz previously said on the social platform X.

New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman on Friday said President Trump and staff around him were “struggling” in the wake of Kirk’s death

“So many people around President Trump are very close to Charlie Kirk. President Trump was very close to Charlie Kirk. And President Trump faced two assassination attempts, one near miss last year,” Haberman said on CNN.

“And so all of that is a lot of the context for how people in the White House and the president are responding to this. I think that he is struggling with this in terms of how to deal with this,” she added.
