Washington D.C. is reacting to a tragic and fatal crash that took place over the Potomac after a military helicopter crashed into a commercial jet on Wednesday night.

The jet, which was reportedly flying in from Wichita, Kansas and allegedly carrying 60 passengers, went down in the river. Current reports indicate at least eight bodies have been recovered, and four passengers have been rescued.

The crash has stunned officials in D.C., with the Trump administration quickly responding.

The President issued a statement late Wednesday night.

“I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport,” he said in a statement. “May God Bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”

The FAA has confirmed the NTSB is leading the investigation, and newly-confirmed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has confirmed his department is monitoring the situation.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been quick to provide information to the press, confirming to Fox News that the helicopter was military.

Vice President J.D. Vance, meanwhile, has called for prayers for those involved in the crash.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is reported to be at the scene, as well. He was just sworn into office on Tuesday.

Video of the crash shows the helicopter flying directly into airspace that is tightly monitored and extremely busy. It is seen as an incredibly secure airspace because it covers the bulk of the U.S. government.

So far, there are no details as to what led to the two aircraft colliding.
