Student stabbed at school in Sydney’s west in ‘targeted attack’

The “nightmare” repeated stabbing of a teenage student at a high school in Sydney’s west was probably a “targeted” attack by another boy, NSW Police have confirmed.
A 14-year-old male student from Arthur Phillip High School in Parramatta was rushed to hospital this morning after he was stabbed multiple times, including in his back, with the attack forcing an immediate campus lockdown.

NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said the apparent offender was a 14-year-old boy “not in custody at this stage”.

The victim was treated at the school by ambulance paramedics and then taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He is reportedly in a stable condition.

Footage from a 9News helicopter showed a pool of blood on a playground surface.

“It appears to be a targeted attack by another 14-year-old boy,” Commissioner Fuller said.

“Both families from both of the boys are in contact and assisting police.

“It was a targeted attack and we don’t have any concerns in relation to the high school.

“In saying that, police will remain at the scene to ensure that the school children and the parents are comfortable.”

Commissioner Fuller said the attack at the Parramatta school was a “particularly concerning” crime.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Joe Ibrahim described the boy’s injuries as “pretty serious”.

Paramedics had been concerned the teenager’s internal organs could have suffered potentially fatal trauma.

“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare,” Inspector Ibrahim said.

“Our paramedics did an exceptional job in stabilising and providing treatment for the teenager who had suffered some pretty serious injuries.

“It’s absolutely horrific when we respond to jobs like these especially when it involves someone so young.”

Police were alerted about 8.30am and are currently searching the surrounding area, but no arrests have been made.

Officers from Parramatta Police Area Command have established a crime scene are investigating how the boy was stabbed.

The school was placed into lockdown after the stabbing but classes have now resumed, a NSW Department of Education spokesperson said.

“School staff immediately administered first aid to the injured student,” the spokesperson said.

Police and emergency services arrived “quickly”, the spokesperson added.
