The No. 3 Democrat in the House admitted President Joe Biden still has a lot of work to do when it comes to the southern border as Republicans bring the hammer on the migrant crisis.

Rep. Pete Aguilar, a fourth-generation Mexican American lawmaker, said if he was asked to grade the job the president has done at the border and on migration, he would give Biden an ‘incomplete.’

Since Biden has taken office, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has encountered more than 4.7 million migrants at the southern border. This includes several months of record-high crossings.

The criticism of Biden from the highest-ranking Latino to ever serve in the House comes as Republicans, who now hold control of the lower chamber, start to crack-down on administrative failures at the border.

‘I think the grade would be incomplete,’ Aguilar told ABC’s This Week in an interview that aired Sunday. ‘There’s plenty to do. We know that it’s a humanitarian issue down at the southern border.’

‘I think there has been common ground on the ability for Dreamers to become citizens. We have Republicans on board with that,’ the California Democrat added.

‘In the last 10 years, Democrats have continually put these bills on the floor, and Republicans have stood in the way on the House side to see any real reform happen,’ he said.

Aguilar, however, blamed the lack of border-related legislation on Republicans.

He said their focus on border security rather than border reform has stunted the process – and said they need to put the attention on protections for so-called Dreamers, which are immigrants who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

So far in the 118th Congress, Republicans have already held two hearings on the southern border crisis in the House Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan, and in the Oversight and Accountability Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer.

Republicans have also started the process to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for direlect of duty and lying to the American public about the security of its borders.

Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona introduced this month official articles of impeachment against Mayorkas. Biggs’ efforts are supported by at least 15 other members of Congress.

Biden finally started focusing last month at least some of his administration’s efforts on quelling the flow of illegal immigrants and asylum-seekers over the southern border.

This included implementing and expanding some Trump-era policies, which have angered pro-immigration groups and advocates as well as a flurry of Democratic lawmakers who dubbed these policies as anti-American and inhumane in some instances.

Biden announced last month new immigration policies that would expand use of the pandemic-era policy known as Title 42, which allowed immediate expulsion of migrants seeking asylum during the pandemic.

He also set up a new program where asylum-seekers from certain countries have to apply for their claims through an application called CBP One before coming to the U.S.

The announcement of new policies came just before Biden’s first-ever trip to the southern border, which was just a few-hours stop-over in El Paso on his way to Mexico City, Mexico for the Three Amigos Summit with the presidents of Mexico and Canada.
