Unbelievable yet true: A Quirky British Tradition that has Stood the Test of Time

It's Hard to Believe a Sport This Cheesy Exists - but Leave It to the Brits' Centuries-Old Event

Our British cousins have some odd customs. In a place called Brockworth in England, they practice one of the oddest: Chasing wheels of cheese down a hill. The winner takes the cheese. It looks like a dangerous sport, but the participants are good feta challenge.

Yes, really.

Tom Kopke slipped, stumbled and tumbled his way to victory in the annual Cooper’s Hill cheese rolling race.

Kopke, from Munich, won the first race of the day as men and women competed in several groups to chase a wheel of cheese down the 200-yard (180 meter) perilously steep pitch near Gloucester, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) west of London. The first to reach the bottom of the hill behind the speedy cheese wins the wheel.

Finding that hard to believe something this grate could exist? Watch:

The winner, a German named Tom Kopke, took the title for the second time, and afterwards, noted that the hillside was dry and more dangerous than in his previous year’s win. He described his winning technique:

I just shut off my brain and went for it.

That much is certain. Herr Topke certainly went at it with muenster-ish determination, and as you will note in the video, he has some scrapes and bruises to show for it. And, despite the odds of injury, it seems a gouda time was had by all. And the Brits seem to welcome people of other nations to participate, as noted by the German champion. Although it’s unknown if any curds were present. And spectators seemed to be present in good numbers as well. You’re welcome to watch if chasing cheese is nacho thing.
