The position of Minister of Foreign Affairs was held by a Belarussian politician named Vladimir Vladimirovich Makei. Makei was the secretary for the ministries of Information and Humanitarian Cooperation, Analysis and Forecast, Office of the Minister, and State Protocol Service.
From 1996 to 1999, he worked as a counselor at the Belarusian embassy in Paris, and he also represented Belarus at the Council of Europe.
He worked as an assistant to Belarus’s president, Alexander Lukashenko, from 2000 to 2008, and as the president’s chief of staff from 2008 to 2012. He had served as Foreign Minister since August 20, 2012.

Former ambassador to France and Poland Pavel Latushko claimed Makei expressed anti-Russian sentiments in front of American and European diplomats. Vladimir Makei, Belarus’s foreign minister, died on Saturday at the age of 64, according to Belta, the country’s official news outlet.
The man died “suddenly,” according to Belta, but no cause of death was given.
Makei, a close friend of long-serving President Alexander Lukashenko, had been the country’s foreign minister since 2012.
Before becoming a minister, he was Lukashenko’s chief of staff.
According to a statement on the official website, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko expressed his condolences to Makei’s family and friends on Saturday.
Makei was scheduled to meet with Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, on Monday. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement mourning his death and referring to him as a “true friend” of Russia.
“The leadership and personnel of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs deeply regret the untimely death of the Republic of Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Vladimirovich Makei on November 26 of this year,” the statement said.
“A true patriot who dedicated his life to serving his Motherland and defending its interests on the international stage has died,” the statement said.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Makei, a true friend of Russia, made a unique contribution to the establishment of the Union State, the development of extensive bilateral cooperation, and the strengthening of ties between the peoples of Russia and Belarus.
“Vladimir Vladimirovich Makei will be remembered in our hearts as a man with a broad soul and deep wisdom, a brilliant professional, friend, and devoted comrade who won the love and respect of people not only within his own country but also far beyond its borders.”
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Makei’s death forced Lavrov to cancel his planned trip to Minsk for Monday.
Vladimir Makei Friendly Approach To Ukraine
Makei was born in the Grodno region of Belarus in 1958, according to his official biography on the foreign ministry website.
In 1980, he graduated from the Minsk State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.
He served in the Armed Forces of the USSR and Belarus from 1980 to 1993 before becoming the President of Belarus’s assistant. From 2008 to 2012, he oversaw the President of Belarus’ Administration.
Since August 22, 2012, Vladimir Makei has served as the country of Belarus’s minister of foreign affairs. He had the title of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador.
Makei reiterated that no one would attack Ukraine from Belarusian soil in the days before Russia’s incursion in February.
According to a report in the Belarusian news agency Belta, this was said over the phone during a conversation between the defense ministers of Belarus and Ukraine. Makei reaffirmed it at a press conference in Minsk.
The telephone discussion, according to the ministry, was initiated by Kiev. He emphasized that Belarus is always in favor of an open debate and is prepared to hold one on any touchy subject.
