Mikel Arteta has confirmed he is looking to bring in players of ‘another level’ in January as Arsenal look to secure a Champions League return.

The Gunners failed to invest in the last winter transfer window, which saw them ultimately miss out on the top-four on the last day of the 2021/22 season.

And Arteta knows the north London giants cannot afford to do that this time with the club sitting pretty at the top of Premier League table.

Arsenal also have the Europa League to think about, where they have sealed their place in the last-16 after Thursday’s 1-0 win over FC Zurich.

Commenting on potential business, Arteta has stated that Arsenal will be active after admitting their fast start to the campaign has led him to rethink the club’s plans.

Speaking ahead of the Gunners’ latest Premier League test in Sunday’s London derby against Chelsea, Arteta said: “The planning of that period is extremely difficult.

“First of all because we know the January window, how special it is, the opportunities that you have, the short window that you have.

“Once you get the player they are straight away competing, so there is not an adaption process.

“And obviously with the position that we are in right now as well, it demands as well another level of player – and that player has to be available.

“We will look at everything and let’s see what we can do.”

A priority for Arteta is to bring in a new winger to ease the burden on Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

Shakhtar Donetsk forward Mykhaylo Mudryk – valued at £85million – has been heavily linked after a summer switch to the Emirates Stadium failed to materialise.

And they have been boosted in their attempts to bring him to England after the Ukrainian outfit failed to progress to the Champions League knockout stages.

Shakhtar goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin has revealed the squad have been making jokes about the potential transfer by stating that Mudryk is ‘already at Arsenal’.

Uruguay international Facundo Torres is also being eyed up by Arsenal following his stunning first year in Major League Soccer at Orlando City.

Torres’ agent has confirmed that the Gunners are interested with talks over a move to take place this weekend.

And Arteta is also keen to bring in a new defensive midfielder, with Arsenal having three bids rejected by Aston Villa for Douglas Luiz on deadline day.

But the Brazilian will not be joining the table-toppers in the New Year after he penned a new long-term contract with the Midlands side.

As a result, the Daily Express has stated that Arsenal are now targeting Luiz’s compatriot Danilo who has starred in his native country at Palmeiras.
