Chelsea have Christopher Nkunku deal 'ready' as injury derails World Cup hope but Graham Potter handed Rafael Leao blow

Chelsea are on the verge of signing Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig and his recent injury seems unlikely to derail their plans.

The France international picked up an injury in training on Tuesday that has unfortunately ruled him out of the World Cup.

Scans revealed he had sprained his left knee and he will be replaced in Les Bleus’ squad.

Although no timeframe has been given, it appears it is not a serious injury but just one that will keep him out for a number of weeks.

It represents awful timing due to the World Cup starting almost immediately after the end of the first part of the domestic season.

The tournament would have been the perfect opportunity to showcase his brilliant club form onto the biggest stage of all.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea have the deal ready to be signed with the Bundesliga club.

He told his YouTube channel: “We know they are already working on Christopher Nkunku for 2023, it is more than advanced.

“Chelsea have that deal ready and waiting to be signed all the contracts on player and club side.”

Other reports suggest that it could be completed in January, while he also is said to have a transfer release clause in his contract that only activates in the summer for £52million.

Either way, it is likely the Blues will land their man.

One player who looks unlikely to be heading to Stamford Bridge is AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, who has seven goals in 20 games for the Italian club this season.

His father told Record: “Rafael has a contract that ends in 2024, we’re in talks about new deal with AC Milan. Until that date, we are dealing with all of that. Without Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barca, we are dealing with that.

“Rafael loves being in Italy.”
