The WWE has seen a lot of enigmatic wrestlers over the years but the most enigmatic wrestlers are often the ones with masks. A masked wrestler has an aura about them that not many can match. Be it scary like Kane, crowd pleaser like Rey Mysterio or downright funny like Hurricane, wrestlers with masks often bring an element of surprise and in the process win over the crowds.

In this article, we will take a look at the top five masked wrestlers in the history of the WWE.

1. Kane

We cannot start this list without Kane being in the number one spot. The Big Red Machine made his WWE debut in 1997 and sent shockwaves across the wrestling world when he ripped the cell doors off its hinges and proceeded to deliver a tombstone piledriver to The Undertaker.

Since then, he went on to have great matches with a host of superstars and won all the big belts on offer. He even removed his mask and went down the corporate route and aided The Authority. Kane managed to reinvent himself without the mask and in the process made his character even more special.

2. Rey Mysterio

The Master of the 619, Rey Mysterio has had quite the career in the WWE. Despite being short, he has gone on to exceed expectations and reach heights that most wrestlers can only dream of. The high flying luchador has lifted all the top belts in the WWE and in the process has had many great matches. Rey’s gravity defying moves have not stopped despite his age and is currently still performing at the very top in the WWE.

3. Mankind

Mick Foley was one of the most loved wrestlers on the planet in the 90s. His wrestling style coupled with the fact that he came up with the hard way resonated with the fans and as a result made him a household name. He made his WWE debut in 1996 as Mankind who was mentally deranged lunatic that enjoyed punishing people inside the ring. He also had attacked his opponents with the infamous sock and as a result got over with the crowd.

4. The Fiend

Bray Wyatt was away from WWE for a while but when he made a comeback, he did not come back as the leader of the Wyatt Family. Wyatt came back as The Fiend. The Fiend as the name suggests came out wearing a scary mask, that quite frankly had the potential to even scare grown men. Add to that, his matches all took place with the arena filled with red lights, which made the viewing even more scary. The Fiend held the WWE Universal Championship but was defeated by Goldberg.

5. Hurricane

Hurricane was probably the most funniest masked wrestler in the history of the WWE. Gregory Helms, which is his real name, started wrestling as ‘The Hurricane’, who was basically a superhero with a cape. He won the WWE European Championship immediately after debuting as The Hurricane. Later on, he went on to form a tag team with the late Rosey and they both became the World Tag Team Champions. Hurricane was involved in a lot of funny backstage segments which the fans remember even to this day.
