Tottenham star Heung-min Son is considering his future at the Premier League due to his desire to win big trophies, according to reports.
Former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood has raised fears over whether Son – and Harry Kane – will want to commit to the club with manager Antonio Conte’s long-term future in doubt.
Speaking at the weekend, Sherwood said: “You are asking Harry Kane and Son to extend their contracts, why would you extend your contract? If you believe in this manager and if your manager is going to be there until the end of the season, you have to make a decision on him, very soon.”
Now Son is being linked with a move away from Tottenham.
He made his name in the Bundesliga, having come through the ranks at Hamburg and then moved to Bayer Leverkusen before joining Spurs in 2015.
And sources in Germany from outlet Sport1 claim the South Korean forward is thinking about his future, with Real Madrid among the clubs interested.
The hugely popular Son is contracted to Tottenham until 2025, but it is claimed he is ‘preparing for the next step in his career’.
The 30-year-old has spent seven years at Spurs, where he has developed into one of the most consistent attackers in European football with a record of 136 goals and 76 assists in 341 games for the north London club.
However, he has no trophies to show for it, with the 2019 Champions League final defeat to Liverpool and the 2021 EFL Cup final defeat to Manchester City the closest Son has come to silverware in a Tottenham shirt.
Son also came home 11th in the vote for the 2022 Ballon d’Or – ten places above teammate and strike partner Harry Kane who finished 21st.
With the World Cup in Qatar to come this winter, Son will have another chance to show his talents on the biggest stage, with South Korea to face Uruguay, Ghana and Portugal in the group stages.

There is no doubt Europe’s top clubs would be interested should he push to leave Spurs, but Sport1 claim Real Madrid are already monitoring his situation with manager Carlo Ancelotti a big fan.
Anticipation at Tottenham was high at the start of the season, with Antonio Conte still at the helm despite links with a return to Juventus, a new raft of summer signings strengthening the squad and a bright start seeing them go unbeaten in seven games – including a 6-2 victory over Leicester and a 4-1 win over Southampton.
But defeats to Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle have darkened the mood in north London.
Conte has made it clear nobody at the club expects to win the Premier League title, but with the Italian’s side sitting top of their group in the Champions League and with FA Cup and Carabao Cup action to come, there is every chance Son could help Tottenham end the club’s 14-year wait for a trophy.
Whether that would be enough to keep the South Korean forward, though, remains to be seen.
Son is one football’s few big stars to rarely speak in public or to the press, meaning he has never once even hinted that he is not fully committed to Spurs.
But at his age, with a footballer of his talent yet to lift a cup or title and European champions and LaLiga winners Real Madrid interested, it would be very hard to resist if Los Blancos do come calling.
