Queensland Origin enforcer David Fifita is adamant his girlfriend will be cheering him on – and proudly wearing a Maroons jumper – when he runs out to play NSW on Wednesday.

Shaylee Bent isn’t so sure, and with good reason – the NRLW star will represent the Blues herself 24 hours later.

The sporting power couple are believed to live together in the Sunshine State, with Bent, 22, recently signing with the Gold Coast Titans ahead of the women’s competition starting in July.

She also represented NSW in 2020 – and while excited for her man Fifita, she is having no part of wearing a Maroons jersey when she watches the clash with her teammates ahead of their own interstate match.

‘I’m NSW through and through, and I want NSW to win in his [Fifita’s] game,’ the athletic second-rower told News Corp.

‘Even though I live in Queensland – and I say that with a lot of dread – you can’t escape that he [Fifita] is Maroon and I’m Blue.

‘Obviously I want him to play really well, but we are both two passionate people and the fact is I was born in NSW and he was born in Queensland.’

It follows cheeky comments earlier this week from Fifita where he declared ‘Shaylee definitely will be wearing my [Queensland] jumper with Fifita on the back, I guarantee.’

Fifita, 23, is also expected to be targeted by NSW given his defensive frailties.

And Phil Gould – NSW’s most successful coach – believes it could be the difference between the two sides.

‘David will be asked to do plenty of work, so he’s going to have to do it every play, every minute for the full 80 minutes and maybe beyond,’  Gould told Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles with Gus podcast.

‘There’s nowhere to hide for these players. You take one lazy step, you don’t make up your ground straight away, the ball just comes back to you, it just finds you.

‘You are playing against the best players so if there’s one chink in his [Fifita’s] armour, they will find you out.

‘No player out there will want to be the weak link in their team.’

Kick-off on Wednesday night in Adelaide is 8.05pm, with the women’s match on Thursday at Sydney’s Commbank Stadium from 7.45pm.
