Kylian Mbappe’s three-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain is actually for two seasons, with the option of a third, it has been revealed.
The French World Cup winner ended a long-running transfer saga by choosing Paris over Madrid back in June, but it could soon resume far sooner than first thought.
L’Equipe claim a club source told the outlet: “This last year is up to Kylian Mbappe,” despite the forward proudly posing with an ‘Mbappe 2025’ shirt upon re-signing.
That 2024/25 is reportedly optional, with PSG unable to trigger the further year without the 23-year-old’s consent.
Due to this revelation, Mbappe could be set to enter the final year of his contract yet again at the end of the current season, re-starting a transfer saga that took over Madrid.
In 2021 the same situation unfolded and dominated the media in France and Spain when Madrid made a number of offers to take the Parisien, despite being able to negotiate a free transfer in January 2022.
Such was club president Florentino Perez’ desire to secure the Galactico deal, they tested PSG with offers from €160million [£138m] all the way up to €200m [£173m] during the 2021 summer window.
However, the Ligue 1 side stood firm despite the risk of losing Mbappe for free, and were later rewarded when he re-signed.
Turning down Madrid led to outrage in Spain, with fans mocking the striker during their Champions League final win over Liverpool, and celebrations back in the capital were spoiled by fans’ outrage.
Club legend Marcelo had a speech ruined by chants of ‘Mbappe, son of a b****’ and shocked newspapers expressed outrage at his reported £1m-a-week wages.
That drama may well resume this summer though, and there’s suggestions it has already, with Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti asked about Mbappe’s contract ahead of his side’s Champions League meeting with Leipzig.
“Again with this?” the Italian responded. “We are delighted with our players, we’re very happy with Vinicius and Rodrygo, we are not thinking about anyone else.”
