Aussies on the ropes

The stakes are high for Australia as they enter the second day of the first Ashes Test at Optus Stadium. After a dramatic opening day that set a new Ashes record with 19 wickets falling, every run will be crucial for the hosts.

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc was in exceptional form, claiming an impressive 7-58 to dismiss England for just 172 before the tea break.

England responded fiercely with their own pace attack, spearheaded by captain Ben Stokes. Stokes delivered a stunning performance, taking five wickets for just 23 runs in six overs during the evening session, leaving Australia at 123-9 by the end of play. The home team still trails by 49 runs.

Adding to Australia’s challenges, veteran opener Usman Khawaja experienced back spasms on the first day. However, the team remains hopeful that he will be fit to bat if needed.

As it stands, Nathan Lyon remains not out on 3 runs, while newcomer Brendan Doggett is yet to take the crease.

Welcome to our live coverage of the second day of the first Ashes Test here at Optus Stadium. Will there be as much drama today as the opening day?
