Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has been left angry by his current situation, after often being used as a substitute in the bigger matches this season.

It has recently emerged that Manchester United have not given up hope of landing the Holland international, despite being snubbed by the midfielder during the summer.

The Red Devils spent the majority of the transfer window chasing the former Ajax star, only to end up missing out on their top target.

De Jong has featured 10 times in all competitions for the Catalan giants, majority of those however being from the substitutes bench, as he has been in and out of the starting line-up this campaign.

The 25-year-old is said to be ‘disgusted’ by the treatment he has received by being a substitute in the bigger matches, according Spanish outlet Sport

He opted to stay at the club and was led to believe that he would remain a regular – despite the club being open to selling him in the summer.

He was left on the bench in matches against the likes of Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Sevilla among others while starting in matches against the weaker teams in the LaLiga and in the Champions League.

De Jong wants regular game time at Barcelona but he is also aware that he has fallen behind young midfielders such as Gavi and Pedri in Xavi’s pecking order.

Xavi also is not seeing De Jong as a long-term replacement for veteran midfielder Sergio Busquets.

This could be a major boost for United with de Jong now said to not be happy with his situation in Spain – therefore potentially being more open to a move to Old Trafford.

This come just days after ESPN reported that Erik Ten Hag has not been put off by the midfielder’s resistance to leave the Spanish giants and the United boss believes he can persuade his former Ajax colleague to join him in England.
