Manchester United have paid up the latest instalment for Bruno Fernandes after reaching the Champions League.

The Portugal international has been an integral part of the team since his move from Sporting in January 2020.

He has made 183 appearances, scoring 68 in the process, including a blitzing start where he netted eight in his first 14 Premier League matches.

And according to Portuguese outlet Record, United have forked out £8.6million (€10m) in total in instalments.

The first €5m payment was made after Fernandes reached 25 appearances while the next was made after they qualified for the Champions League.

The first year they reached the top four saw them pay €3m, then the second time another €1m while this year United have finished in the top four again, meaning a further €1m has been paid.

Last season, United failed to reach the Champions League, which saw them not pay up but that has since been rectified in Erik ten Hag’s first campaign in charge.

In Fernandes’ first two years at Old Trafford, they managed to get in the Champions League.

But United might not have finished paying for the playmaker, with another €15m (£13m) possibly still to be paid.

However, it will rely on the Red Devils winning the Champions League and Fernandes winning the Ballon d’Or.

The midfielder is one of the first names on the teamsheet under Ten Hag, who has made him de facto captain with Harry Maguire left out of the team.

That is despite his goal tally declining this season from his previous years as he has just seven goals in the Premier League this campaign.

In his first full season at United, Fernandes scored a total of 28 times.

That has diminished the love from the fans towards the 28-year-old, who would have thrilled them when he dug out Liverpool earlier this week.

A 4-1 win over Chelsea on Thursday confirmed their status in next year’s Champions League, ending any chance of Liverpool leapfrogging them.

Fernandes spoke to Sky Sports after the game and said: “We know that means a lot.

“For us it’s about getting our goals completed so we did.

“Obviously, we knew they [the fans] would be happy for Liverpool to not be there, but for us it’s not about that.

“It’s getting the best we can for ourselves because we have to look after ourselves.”
