Sofyan Amrabat’s brother has revealed Manchester United tried to sign the Morocco superstar on loan in January.

The midfielder played a huge role in guiding the Atlas Lions to the World Cup semi-finals in December.

As a result, the 26-year-old attracted plenty of interest from some of Europe biggest clubs, including Liverpool, Tottenham and Inter Milan.

As football shifted its focus back to the leagues as the break for the World Cup came to an end, it wasn’t long before the January transfer window opened again.

And it turns out the Reds and Spurs weren’t the only Premier League clubs thinking about making a move for the midfielder.

Speaking to Voetbal Primeur, the Morocco star’s brother Nordin, who previously played for Watford, said: “I can name three clubs who were concrete in the last two or three days of the transfer window.

“Manchester United wanted a loan with an option to buy deal, Fiorentina rejected.”

With just one year left on his deal at the Serie A club come the end of this season, the Red Devils looked to strike while the iron was hot with Amrabat, assuming the Italian side would want to cash in.

But Fiorentina rejected the move, leading to Erik ten Hag bringing in Marcel Sabitzer on loan from Bayern Munich late in the window to replace the injured Christian Eriksen.

And should the Red Devils want to make a move for Amrabat again in the future, they’re likely to face plenty of competition.

But with a £50bn takeover looking to be on the horizon, money may not be an issue for them in their pursuit.
