Martin Odegaard's contract renewal at Arsenal is met with joy as Piers Morgan leads tributes to the club captain on social media

Arsenal received a huge boost just days before the North London Derby as captain Martin Odegaard signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The Norwegian midfielder arrived at the Emirates initially on loan during the January transfer window in 2021 before making his move permanent in the summer that same year.

Since his arrival the 24-year-old has gone from strength-to-strength and has had pundits and fans alike waxing lyrical about his performances.

Upon signing his deal Odegaard said ‘It was an easy decision for me, ‘I felt connected and I felt at home here since the first day. And also I was moving around a lot and struggling to really settle down, so I felt like I needed a place to come and settle down and to kind of find a home.’

And given the fans’ reactions to Odegaard extending his stay at the Emirates Stadium until at least 2028 it is easy to see why he feels so at home.

The decision to renew has been met with a lot of fanfare on social media led by vocal Arsenal fan Piers Morgan.

He posted on X formally known as Twitter: ‘Arsenal captain signs new 5-year contract. Great news about a brilliant player and leader.’ Including three clapping hands emojis.

‘Best captain since Thierry Henry or even Patrick Vieira’ 

Following the announcement, Arsenal fans were quick to express their delight at the announcement.

One user posted: ‘Martin Odegaard is leading Arsenal to the Premier League and Champions League titles. Best captain.’

While another tweeted: ‘Couldn’t ask for a better person to lead our young guns on. First on the pitch, last off and always leading with confidence and composure. You just can’t help but feel excited for the years ahead.’

A third wrote: ‘Best captain since Thierry Henry or even Patrick Vieira.’

The midfielder has enjoyed a great start to the new campaign – scoring three goals in six games so far.

Odegaard netted in the Gunners’ 4-0 win over PSV in the Champions League earlier this week.

One Arsenal fan was quick to take a swipe at Real Madrid after they sold the Norwegian to the Gunners two years ago.

The Gunners uploaded a touching video to X, captioning it: ‘A place where Martin beløngs,’ along with a heart emoji.

It features Odegaard talking about his rise to the top, with the midfielder then stating that he has found a ‘football family’ at the Emirates. 

Throughout the video, the midfield star can be seen sharing laughs with several Arsenal fans as he looks delighted to be putting pen-to-paper on a new deal.
