Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink will be tasked with getting England’s strikers firing with his appointment to Gareth Southgate’s staff set to be confirmed.

The former Holland international will join the senior team’s coaching staff for their European Championship campaign, replacing Chris Powell – whose placement on an FA scheme devised to enhance diversity expired.

Hasselbaink has already started working with the England squad and was on the training field with Southgate’s players yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Italy in Naples.

And the main focus of the former Burton manager’s new role will be hone the skills of England’s forwards – such as captain Harry Kane.

Hasselbaink’s impressive career as a goalscorer provides the team with a different skillset to predecessor Powell, indeed his expertise in attacking areas is understood to be a key reason behind Southgate’s decision to draft in the Dutchman.

Hasselbaink, 50, scored 195 goals in 396 appearances for Leeds United, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Middlesbrough between 1997 and 2006.

Southgate and Hasselbaink grew close during their time together at Middlesbrough and have remained in touch over the years.

England last had a designated striker coach for the World Cup in Russia in 2018; Allan Russell becoming a key member of Southgate’s backroom team.

However, the Scot – who is currently doing his coaching badges – quit the job ahead of Euro 2020 following a road traffic accident when he allowed his car to be driven by brother, Simon, who was over the legal drink drive limit and uninsured.
