Ally McCoist believes Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha would get into the Liverpool team right now based on his current performances.
The Reds have been struggling, particularly in the Premier League, and sit ninth having already lost four of their 12 games.
That’s already double the amount they lost in the entirety of last season, and one more than in their 2019/20 title winning campaign.
A number of issues have been highlighted and the departure of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich this summer has no doubt been a contributing factor.
Liverpool don’t quite seem to be able to generate the same impact from that left hand side, and the problems have been exacerbated by injuries to Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
Could they look to address this in January? Well, look no further than Crystal Palace star Zaha.
The 29-year-old has five goals and one assist in the league this season and looks on top form.
He is also nearing the end of his contract and Palace may look to cash in now, rather than lose him on a free in the summer.
Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes that on current form he would get into the Liverpool and Chelsea teams.
He told talkSPORT Breakfast: “When everyone is playing well, he might not get in it. But right now you ask some of the Liverpool fans after some of the performances at Forest [A 1-0 defeat] and some of the performances at home against Leeds [a 2-1 defeat], there are some fans that would take him on his current performances.
“I take you point that if everyone is playing well, but that’s not how it operates.”
McCoist added: “Wilfried Zaha has absolutely earned his stripes and does not owe anybody anything.
“He owes himself the opportunity to go and make the right decision.”
Injuries have also played a factor elsewhere on the pitch and the midfield struggles of Liverpool have been well documented.
Naby Keita has been sidelined with a thigh injury, while loanee Arthur Melo will also be out of action for some time.
Thiago Alcantara has been in and out of the side with injuries, while Klopp has had to rely on ageing stars and also youngsters.
Reports in Germany claim Liverpool will now go ‘all in’ to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham
However, that is likely to happen in the summer, rather than in January.
So, here’s how the Reds could look if they added Zaha during the winter transfer window.
