Young Aussie girl dies on overseas family holiday to New Zealand after she is swept away in a creek at Fiordland National Park

A young Aussie girl has died while on a family holiday overseas after she was swept away in fast-flowing creek.

The 10-year-old fell into the Marian Creek, near the Hollyford Rive in Fiordland National Park, in New Zealand, on Thursday morning around 11.40am. 

Emergency services rushed to the scene and found the girl and pulled her from the water.

First responders performed CPR on her but she could not be saved.   

Southland Area Commander Inspector Mike Bowman said the incident has left the girl’s family devastated. 

‘This has been a traumatic event for those involved and police are providing [the family] with support,’ Inspector Bowman said. 

‘We would like to extend our sincere condolences to them.’ 

Inspector Bowman thanked emergency crews and the public in their efforts to help save the girl.  

A report is being prepared for the coroner. 

Daily Mail Australia has contacted DFAT for comment.

Fiordland National Park is located around 170km southwest of Queenstown in New Zealand’s South-Island. 

The world heritage listed site comprises 1.2million hectares of mountains, glaciers, and lakes is known for it’s breathtaking views of the natural landscape. 

The park is a popular tourist spot that is known for it’s outdoor activities including kayaking, mountain biking, and bushwalks through the vast parklands.

Marian Creek is situated in dense bushland with the rugged terrain making the site a challenging place to visit.
